Abstract and Rationale
The New Literacies and Global Learning (NLGL) master's concentration demands that students produce original content in their area of concentration on the basis of a "Compelling Question;" this final synthesis is the product of an independent study abroad project in Russia, instruction on the importance of development theory in education, and courses on global research and leadership. The highlighted question is, "How can school systems produce global citizens?" Adams proposes that school systems can produce global citizens by teaching a
high-quality curriculum which frames at least a portion of educational content
in a global context, by fostering
positive leadership skills in students, instructors, and on an administrative level, and by mandating
that students partake in cultural activities such as international
conferences, study abroad experiences, and community
volunteering programs, over the course of their educational experiences. She postulates that these experiences can be organized into five
processes: Introspection, Investigation, Comparison, Assimilation/Synthesis,
Leadership. She supports her theory with activities from her own NLGL curriculum and positive development of her own personal identity as a global citizen during her time in the NLGL program.
